What can you print from a 108 MP photo?

A 108 MP photo prints sharp at up to 24x36". At 12,032 × 9,024 pixels — 108.6 MP — it clears 300 DPI at all 11 standard sizes once the crop to each aspect ratio is accounted for.

The number on the box. Nine of these pixels are combined into one for the file the phone actually saves, so the everyday output is 12 MP.

The number on the box is not the number in the file

A 108 MP phone saves about 12 MP by default. It combines groups of sensor pixels into one — pixel binning — producing a cleaner 4,032 × 3,024 file instead of a noisy full-resolution one. Unless your customer deliberately switched the camera to its full-resolution mode, what you have been sent is what a 12 MP photo can print, not what this page describes.

Effective DPI accounts for the crop needed to reach each aspect ratio, so it is lower than dividing raw pixels by inches. That crop is the part most calculators quietly skip.

Where a 108 MP photo comes from

  • A Samsung or Xiaomi phone in its 108 MP mode
  • A medium format camera

Knowing the source matters as much as the number. A file can be the right pixel size and still be ruined by compression on the way to you, which is the case whenever a customer sends a photo through a chat app instead of sending the original photo file undamaged. When the numbers do work, the next question is the crop: see 24x36" print resolution for what this size demands.

If the verdicts above look worse than you expected, the reason is almost always cropping rather than the megapixel count, which is covered in why a customer's phone photo will not print. And if the file's DPI tag is confusing you rather than its pixels, start with the difference between DPI and PPI for print.

108 MP questions

What can you print from a 108 MP photo?
A 108 MP photo prints sharp at up to 24x36". At 12032 by 9024 pixels — 108.6 MP — it clears 300 DPI at all 11 standard sizes, once the crop to each aspect ratio is accounted for.
How many pixels is a 108 MP photo?
12,032 by 9,024 pixels, which is 108.6 MP. The spec sheet rounds that to 108 MP. Megapixels are just width times height divided by a million, so the same megapixel count can come in different shapes — and the shape decides how much you lose to cropping.
Does a 108 MP phone actually save 108 MP photos?
Usually not. By default these phones combine groups of sensor pixels into one — pixel binning — and save a file of about 12 MP, or 4,032 by 3,024 pixels. You get the full 108 MP only if the camera was deliberately switched into its full-resolution mode before the shot. This is why a customer can promise you a 108 MP photo and send something that prints no better than a standard phone snap.
Can you upscale a 108 MP photo to print bigger?
Resampling raises the pixel count without adding detail, so a print made from an upscaled file looks soft and often plasticky in fur. It is worth trying when the photo is close to the threshold and hopeless when it is far below. Check the real numbers first rather than trusting an upscaler's preview.
