Why your customer’s phone photo isn’t good enough to print

A customer’s pet photo fails in print for four reasons, and only one of them is resolution. The other three — messaging-app compression, motion blur and low-light noise — pass every pixel-count check and then ruin the print anyway. All four are detectable in about two minutes, before you have spent an evening on the portrait.

Reason one: not enough pixels for the size they ordered

This is the one everybody knows about and still gets wrong, because the obvious calculation is the wrong calculation.

The obvious version: divide the photo’s pixel width by the print width in inches. A 3024-pixel-wide photo printed at 8 inches gives 378 DPI, which sounds comfortable. The problem is that an 8x10 print is a 4:5 rectangle and the phone photo is 3:4, so you have to crop a strip off each side to get there. The pixels in that strip are thrown away and contribute nothing.

Any honest number has to be computed after the crop. That is what the checker below does — drop a photo in and it reports the effective DPI at every standard size.

The thresholds worth holding to: 300 DPI and above prints sharp at any viewing distance, 200 to 299 DPI is fine for something framed on a wall, and below 200 DPI should not be sold at that size.

Reason two: it came through a messaging app

This is the single most common cause, and it is invisible unless you look at the pixel dimensions. WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram all recompress images in transit, typically to somewhere around 1200 pixels on the long edge with fairly aggressive JPEG compression on top.

A 1200x1600 file is about 228 DPI at 5x7 and 150 DPI at 8x10. It is not a printable file for anything but the smallest size you offer.

The good news is that the customer almost always still has the real one. It is sitting in their camera roll at full size; the compressed copy is an artefact of how they sent it, not of what they have. Asking them to email it or AirDrop it usually solves the whole problem —here is a message you can paste to ask without it sounding like a complaint.

How to spot it instantly

Long edge of roughly 1200, 1440 or 2048 pixels, with a file size under about 400 KB, is a messaging-app copy nearly every time. A genuine iPhone original is 4032 pixels on the long edge and two to five megabytes.

Reason three: motion blur, which no resolution fixes

Dogs move. A photo can be 48 megapixels and still be unusable because the animal turned its head during a 1/30th-second exposure indoors.

Zoom to 100% and look at the eyes specifically. Eyes are the highest-contrast detail in the frame and the first place softness shows. If the catchlight — the bright reflection in the pupil — is a smear rather than a point, the photo is blurred, and it will be just as blurred at 8x10 as it is on screen.

This is the failure mode that upscaling cannot help with, and it is worth being clear-eyed about that. AI upscalers work by inventing plausible detail consistent with what is already there. Given a blurred photo, they invent plausible detail consistent with blur, or they hallucinate crisp fur that does not match the actual animal. Both look worse than the original at print size.

Reason four: shot in low light

Indoor phone photos are usually taken at high ISO, which means noise: fine coloured speckle, worst in the dark areas. On a phone screen the phone’s own noise reduction hides it. At 11x14 on matte paper it is clearly visible, and on a black dog it is very visible indeed.

Check by viewing a dark patch of fur at 100%. If you can see coloured speckling or the fur looks waxy and smeared — that waxiness is aggressive noise reduction, which is its own problem — the print will show it.

Noise is partially recoverable in a way blur is not, but it costs you fur detail: every denoising pass smooths exactly the fine high-contrast texture that makes a pet portrait look like fur rather than felt.

The two-minute screening routine

  1. Drop the file into the checker. If nothing clears 200 DPI at the size ordered, stop here and ask for another photo.
  2. Look at the file size and long edge. Around 1200px and under 400 KB means a messaging-app copy. Ask for the original.
  3. Zoom to 100% on the eyes. Smeared catchlight means motion blur. Nothing recovers it.
  4. Zoom to 100% on the darkest fur. Coloured speckle means high ISO. Usable, but expect to lose some fur detail cleaning it up.

Two minutes at the start of an order, against twenty minutes of work plus a refund and a public review at the end of it. This is the cheapest habit in the whole business.

What to do when the photo fails

Do not silently print it smaller, and do not silently upscale it and hope. Both of those decisions belong to the customer, and both of them go badly when made on the customer’s behalf without telling them.

Offer two specific options instead: send a different photo, or take the largest size this photo genuinely supports. Naming the size — “this one will look great at 8x10, but 16x20 would be visibly soft” — turns a problem into a recommendation, and recommendations are what people came to a small shop for.

Not really. Upscaling can add plausible-looking detail to a photo that is merely small, but it cannot recover detail from a photo that is out of focus or motion-blurred, because that information was never captured. It will invent fur texture that does not match the animal, which looks worse than softness.
Should I tell the customer their photo is bad?
Tell them the photo cannot support the size they ordered, and offer two specific options: send a different photo, or switch to the largest size this one prints well at. Framing it as a choice between two good outcomes avoids the conversation becoming a criticism of their photography.
