Effective DPI accounts for the crop needed to reach each aspect ratio, so it is lower than dividing raw pixels by inches. That crop is the part most calculators quietly skip.
Where a 2 MP photo comes from
- A photo forwarded through Facebook Messenger
- An old webcam or a 2000s compact camera
- A thumbnail saved from a web page
Knowing the source matters as much as the number. A file can be the right pixel size and still be ruined by compression on the way to you, which is the case whenever a customer sends a photo through a chat app instead of sending the original photo file undamaged. When the numbers do not work, the fix is not software — it is asking a customer for a better pet photo before you start.
