How do you put your pet’s name on a photo?

Type the name, choose where it sits, and set its size and color so it reads against the photo; a line near the bottom in a plain typeface is the usual choice. PetPrintKit puts the name on every print size at once, in the same place on each, free to try in your browser.

Five steps

All of this happens in the editor’s third stage, on a preview of the portrait with its background already in place.

  1. Type the name. Each line you type is a line on the print, and nothing is re-wrapped. "Biscuit" on one line and "Good boy" on the next stay exactly that way.
  2. Choose where it sits. Nine spots, from the top corners to the bottom corners. Bottom center is where the editor starts, and where a name usually looks right.
  3. Set the size and the ink. The size is the height of the letters, and it stays put as you type, so a short name does not come out enormous. Dark text on a light background, light text on a dark one, and a lower opacity if it feels heavy.
  4. Pick a typeface. Plain or serif, with bold and all capitals as options. A plain face at a modest size reads best from across a room.
  5. Read it before you download. Check the spelling on the preview. A typo in a name is the one mistake that is obvious to everyone once it is framed.

Add your pet’s name

What to write

The name they answer to, usually. A second line can carry a breed, a nickname, a year, or nothing at all. Three lines is the most a portrait carries before the words start to compete with the face.

The same on every size

The name is sized and placed relative to each print rather than in fixed pixels. Placed once, it lands in the same spot on 5x7, 8x8, 8x10, A4, 11x14, 12x12, 12x16, A3, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36, a little in from the edge so a frame’s mat does not cover it.

What it costs

Everything described here is free: the print-size check, the background, the name, the room previews and watermarked downloads to see the result. The clean full-size files for that photo, every size in one ZIP, are $5 once, with no account and no subscription.

It all runs in your own browser. The photo is never uploaded, to us or to anyone else.
